Who Should Be Screened for Low Testosterone?

There are a number of challenges in diagnosing hypogonadism in men. The signs and symptoms are often nonspecific to hypogonadism and are modified by age and comorbidities, making diagnosis of this disorder challenging.1 Assessing your patients for low testosterone should include a combined approach that considers age, signs and symptoms, and presence of certain comorbidities such as:

  • Diabetes2
  • Erectile dysfunction3
  • Obesity2
  • High cholesterol2
  • Long-term use of opioid pain medications4
  • HIV5,6
Physicians should be aware that these risk factors have been linked to a higher chance of having low testosterone. More rigorous screening of these patients for low testosterone may be indicated.
